Directions for Winterizing Your Camper
1. Drain all water tanks and holding tanks. Don't forget the HOT water heater.
2. If your water heater is equipped with a bypass, set it to winterize. If it is not equipped with a bypass, now would be a good time to install one. It will allow you to do the job with about 1/3 the amount of antifreeze. Remove the water filter if you have one.
3. Be sure to use only RV type, non-toxic, antifreeze and pour it into your fresh water tank. Use 2 gallons if you can bypass the water heater, or 5 to 6 gallons if not. (Never use automobile antifreeze or windshield washer antifreeze. These can kill you!)
4. Turn on your RV water pump and let it pump the antifreeze through the system just like water. Start with the hot water side and open each faucet until the pink antifreeze comes through. Then go back and open each faucet on the cold water side. Don't forget to open the water valve on the toilet.
5. Allow about a cup of antifreeze to drain into each sink trap. Also, let some drain into the waste holding tank through the toilet.
6. The only thing left to do is the city water connection. Turn off the pump and drain the pressure from the system by opening a faucet. Have a helper go outside and depress the check valve in the city water connection. Don't stand in front of it or you will get wet. Turn on the water pump. The city water connection is now like an open faucet and antifreeze should flow through it. When the pink antifreeze comes through, release the check valve and turn off the pump.
7. Your water system is now winterized.
